DROPS METAVERSE

The DROPS Metaverse is an initiative by the DROPS (Dropped Object Prevention Scheme) Asia Chapter to create a forward-looking learning and collaboration platform in Virtual Reality.

Using a VR headset, windows or mac, you can enter a multiplayer 3D environment which has been curated for you to learn all about dropped object hazard prevention. Using a customized avatar, you will be able to navigate various scenarios to experience the impact of dropped objects, identify potential hazards, and learn about the various best practices for prevention. During our regular events, you can use the same avatar to meet with industry professionals just as if you were at a trade show.

IADC Middle East Conference & Exhibition

November 14, 2023 - November 15, 2023

The 2023 IADC DRILLING MIDDLE EAST CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION will bring together industry leaders and drilling professionals to discuss such challenges and share best practices. Cutting-edge technology advances, including drilling automation, will be featured, as will case studies of relevant technical achievements. The premier event also will highlight evolving approaches to safety and training, providing practical information on new tools and processes that can be used to improve HSE performance.

Drops Asia representative Joachim van der Meulen and Axess Middle East Representative Ravi Mishra will be presenting the DROPS Metaverse using virtual reality.

Dropped objects remain a top cause of incidents in drilling operations despite many advancements. The DROPS Asia Chapter partially attributes this to insufficient knowledge, competency, and deviating safety attitudes. Traditional training methods, such as classroom training or e-learning, may teach theory but often fail to create emotional commitment.

The DROPS Metaverse project is an initiative for an immersive, VR training platform enhancing DROPS training. Modeled after Shell’s in-house training, it transforms PPT-driven sessions into hands-on experiences, allowing participants to learn through trial and error.

(Bi)-annual DROPS inspections are a core strategy in preventing dropped objects, with Axess trusted by various drilling contractors and operators. However, analogous to personal health, lifestyle changes like reduced calorie intake and regular exercise can significantly decrease the likelihood of developing serious conditions. Axess has shifted focus from DROPS surveys to assisting customers in continuous dropped object prevention management, emphasizing a competent workforce conducting regular in-house inspections.

In collaboration with DROPS Asia, Axess developed a module within the DROPS Metaverse, reinforcing prevention efforts and addressing the root causes of dropped object incidents. This method holds promise for improving knowledge, competency, and attitudes toward safety, thus reducing the prevalence of dropped objects in drilling operations.

Aside from the presentation, attendees can experience the DROPS Metaverse at the Axess Middle East exhibition booth at the conference.
